Life in Spain

There are lots of reasons why people choose to live in Spain. Contrary to what many people believe, however, Spain is not one country but a cluster of regions. In the UK there are several languages and lots of dialects which can make life difficult for foreigners. Spain is just the same, there are several languages and each region has its own dialect. Even the weather is different depending on the region.

When we first relocated to Spain, we favoured the Costa Blanca. The weather is very favourable being amongst the driest, and with property prices that were still reasonable. This is where we have stayed and this obviously says something for the life here.

Spain is a settled, civilised country which has been a part of the EEC for many years. Though many of its legal and administrative systems seem archaic, it is moving very quickly towards typical northern European standards. Some say that when this happens, Spain will lose its charm, but many look forward to it happening.

Apart from holidaymakers, people come to Spain for many reasons, the three main being retirement, investment and work.

Retirement in Spain can be idyllic with a pension taking the financial worries away. There are properties to suit retired people and a range of social activities that are unrivalled in the UK. Most retired people have many more friends in Spain than they ever dreamt about in the UK.

Those wishing to invest in property in Spain can look forward to a good return. At present, the market has reached the bottom of a price trough and anyone buying at the moment can expect good returns within just a few years. In addition to the flourishing rental market, prices are now poised to increase providing a decent capital gain.

There are many people looking for a new life which includes work in Spain. If you have a skill that the Spanish require, there is a thriving jobs market but you would need to learn the language to become in demand. Many people become self employed serving both the British and Spanish communities.

Whether the rich culture of Spain is the main draw or the relatively low cost of living, you will certainly notice the slower pace of life. This can take a little while to adjust to but means that you will probably live years longer as a result.

Obviously the climate is good, but also the health system will more than rival anything seen in the UK with the additional benefit of low waiting lists. For many people, one of the important things is being able to maintain contact with family in the UK. This is never a problem with modern telephone systems and mobile phones now everywhere.

Of course, Spain is not perfect for everyone. It is important to be realistic about your expectations and be delighted when they are exceeded.

Buy in Spain

Buying property in Spain requires either prior knowledge or advice. If you know how to buy and feel confident in doing so, then all you need to do is to look at the properties that we have and make a choice. Alternatively you may wish to contact us and we will search for properties that suit your needs if we do not have one which is just right for you.

Many people contact us with fixed ideas only to find that their thoughts change after just a few questions. You may want to discuss the size of your new home. Often people believe that they need three bedrooms only to find that two would suit them better and the third bedroom would simply end up as a junk room. Most people have lots of visitors in the first year or two but the numbers fall off sharply after that.

Most people want to be near the coast, ideally with a sea view. This can be delightful but this is where most of the tourists and traffic congregate in the summer as well. If you cannot stand the thought of being surrounded by tourists during the summer, the coast can still be possible but a little further away from the busier areas.

There are many people who would like to live slightly inland. Certainly you will get more for your money and a larger plot in which your property will be located. The further inland that you live, the more the requirement to learn the language. Whilst in the tourist areas, or where the British congregate, English will be widely spoken by Spanish people, as soon as you venture inland, you will need more of the language.

There are obviously straightforward things to consider if you decide to retire in Spain. While you are still young, you may feel that the stairs to the first floor may not be a problem. In ten years or more, you may have wished that you had chosen a bungalow.

The UK press likes to report about poor security in Spain but the reality is that there are fewer problems than in a similar location in the UK. Being aware is all that is needed, and of course, taking reasonable precautions.

After an initial discussion, you may be ready to consider the style of home that would suit you. There are fincas, town houses, villas, apartments, bungalows, holiday style homes and even developments on golf clubs. It is not just the style that needs to be discussed; you may want a detached villa, semi-detached, a quad or terraced property. You may want advice about whether an urbanisation would suit you or not.

You may decide that you would like to buy a new property and we can help you with choosing a builder. You might prefer to buy a property already built and ready for you to take the keys, or you might feel that buying off plan would be better. Some people prefer to buy resale because most of the problems with new properties have already been resolved.

Everyone needs to know about the cost of buying in Spain. In addition to the price quoted there are costs to be included. In general, about 10% should be added to cover taxes and the legal costs. Mortgages are available in Spain but banks have different rules regarding how much they will lend depending on the property valuation and the buyers personal circumstances.

Just like in the UK, there are good areas and some that are not so good. A photograph will display the house at its best but only local knowledge can tell you whether the location would be suitable.

There are so many things to consider that professional advice is almost always a must. For those that are not sure, we might even suggest taking an extended holiday in the area that they like. This gives them the opportunity to live in the area and obtain the "feel" of it before making a commitment.
